Reinventing global sounds, rewriting the rulebook - winners of the Royal Over-Seas League Competition 2017 - Kabantu, meaning "of the people", is a five-piece band from Manchester who unravel new marriages of music from around the globe to celebrate the space where different cultures meet. Over Old Midsummer Weekend we are showing different versions of Shakespeare's best known play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. This version is a film from 1935 starring James Cagney, Mickey Rooney and Olivia de Havilland. The evening will start with a supper, followed by a talk from Andre Killian about the play and the film will round off the evening. Following a very successful appearance in the 2016 and 2017 Mananan Festivals, the Flamenco Dancers and Musicians have been invited back for 2018 at the request of the Friends of the Festival. The Ilusion Flamenca dance school was started in 1999 by Angela Alonso in a small studio in South London. This month's book is 'The Bastard of Istanbul' by Elif Sahfak which centers around Asya Kazancı and Armanoush Tchakhmakhchian. It is set in Arizona; San Francisco, California; and Istanbul, Turkey. The Sleeping Beauty is a ballet in a prologue and three acts. Marius Petipa and Ivan Vsevolojsky wrote the story of the ballet based on Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood". Tchaikovsky wrote the music. The Sleeping Beauty was first presented at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, on 15 January 1890. This film version is from 1965 choreography by Rudolf Nureyev.
